Writing my first fantasy novel

Hello, fantastic, lovely people.

I want to tell you about my first novel that I’ve started on, in February. Firstly, I’m having so much fun! Upon deciding on a writing future, (whatever that may lead to), I had a super idea of writing a novel – all good practice and all that. So I set about researching on loads of inspiration and techniques. (Pinterest being my best friend!), plus with starting my blog in February I also joined Twitter – and I must say what an amazing community! I’ve had so much support from other writers and Authors, it’s incredible! so with that, it’s coming along nicely.

Plus so much more pins on my Pinterest!

Secondly, my inspiration is everywhere!

My inspiration – in books:

Cassandra Clare – Shadowhunters series

Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter’s series – If you’re aware, this series is my absolute favorite!! I love how deeply the series goes with so much going on and amazing characters you just can’t help loving! Her work is exciting and detailed, she keeps me wanting more.

C.C Hunter – Born at Midnight:

C.C Hunter’s Born at Midnight – I’ve only read the first one of this series, and I really enjoyed the different characters. It has a wide range and I loved that – plus the love story was super! Hunter’s descriptions of her characters personalities were brilliant, the attitudes really came to life!

My inspiration – in T.V series:

Vampirediaries

The Vampire Diaries – I really rated this series and I am sad that it has now ended. One of the main reasons for liking this show, ( apart from Ian Somerhalder’s glowing smile!), was the many variations of supernatural beings…. you can see where my novel is heading!

Teen Wolf:

This T.V show is brilliant! I feel it’s darker and tends to be more frightening than The Vampire Diaries, which is the main reason for loving this show….. ( and of course the many topless men!). I also thought the myths and mythical creatures in the show were a nice change from the usual.

So as you can see I have a lot of inspiration running wild in my mind, and my world building is coming together. My characters are taking shape and coming to life in my head…. (arguing with me already!). I’m really enjoying creating my characters and developing their personalities, it’s exciting and limitless! My next thing I’d like to research is some fantasy animals. Can’t have a fantasy story without some amazing creatures.

I know I have a long way to go, and I’m not in any rush – so wish me luck! I’ll keep you posted on this.

Happy reading, and if you have any helpful information for me I’d appreciate it.

  1. Good luck! 🙂 I confess I’m not familiar with any of your inspirations, either the books or the TV series, and I write fantasy too.

I agree, the community of writers on Twitter is wonderful.

There are a lot of great resources online that will help you write. For example, if you’re not familiar with K.M Weiland’s site, I suggest you check it out: https://www.helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com/ (It seems to be having a technical issue right now, but it has a lot of valuable information.)

      1. I’ll check some of them out!

I get inspiration from all kinds of places. My favourite fantasy novels, of course (Katharine Kerr’s Deverry series comes to mind), books of all genres, TV series… There’s something to pick up everywhere. For example, I hate politics, but the TV series The West Wing has fantastic dialogue. The first spark for my story came to me when I was watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer – not that I write urban fantasy.

  2. Such a lovely & so aspiring compilation of “inspiration” you have got. Vampires’s diary’s been one of my fav. Nina played a very good character in that, and am sure, in your debut novel, you’re gonna bring allot of new and unique characters with a very fair and fine story-concept to readers. Good luck with your novel. I’d be looking forward to reading your work!
