On to the interview, here is what Claire had to say…
Q1 -S – I’m a new fan of yours and it was Odium that hooked me in big time. In fact, I’m pretty sure it was the first page! I love Nina, she’s one badass character-one thing I’ve been dying to ask you though, is there a hidden meaning to her love for Doc Martin boots? I own a few pairs myself and LOVE them. So are you a fellow lover of the boots? Or is it all Nina?
C – I ADORE Doc Martins!! They’ve been my favourite boots since I was old enough to get myself a pair. Growing up I had several pairs in different colours – blue, black, burgundy. I couldn’t get enough. Now as a mum I only have two pairs lol My thirteen year old daughter got her first pair last year and she complained over them rubbing on her heel and I told her that’s just what they do hahaha. They rip your feet apart for the first couple of weeks and then they’re worn in and you can wear them for years!
Q2 -S – I’m up to Book three in reading the Odium series, and I know there are a few more. How do you plan a long series? Do you have a method or do you wing it?
C – I have at least three more books loosely planned. I know where the story ends, it’s just where the plot takes me as I write it. It was only ever supposed to be one book but the story has continued to grow and grow over the years. As for writing, I tend to write a loose plot of between 1-3k and then wing the rest of it. I like to have pointers to keep me on track – a beginning, a middle and an end, to start with. But having stop points in the book (areas that you need to get the characters to) is a great way to keep you writing and not get stuck.
Q3 – S – Do you cry when you kill my favourite characters or rub your hands together and smile? Haha, I won’t hold you to this answer, promise…
C – Honestly? Most of the time I feel quite sad about it haha! There was several characters in book one of Odium that I hated killing. They were such great characters and I loved writing them, but their deaths were necessary to the plot. No character is ever safe with me. No matter how big they are in the book. If it’s needed for the plot then I’ll cut a bitch lol
Q4 – S – I’m a crazy emotional person when reading, and if a book has you reacting, from swearing to laughing, then it’s a winner! You have definitely gripped my heart and caused me to turn heads with my potty mouth whilst reading your work. So, when you’re writing these scenes, are your own emotions turned up high?
C – Oh God yeah! Sometimes I Have to walk away from a manuscript because it gets to me so much. For instance, in Out of the Dark; my dystopian novel, I had to take several long walks because the story was just breaking my heart. When I had to listen and approve the audiobook I cried like a fucking baby!
Q5 – S – Do you have a favourite book/series of your own? Or are they all your babies?
C – I tend to find that whatever I’m currently working on is actually my favourite haha! Beautiful Victim, my latest thriller, definitely holds a firm place in my heart. As does Out of the Dark.
Q6 – S – While we’re talking about favourites, do you have a favourite book/series to read?
C – I have very eclectic tastes, so I tend to read several books at one time. I pretty much devour anything Eli Constant, A. Meredith Walters or Joanna Wylde writes. And give me any thriller book and I’ll be glued to the pages!
Q7 – S – What inspires your writing ideas?
C – Anything. Literally anything at all. Sometimes a single line will pop into my head and a lightbulb will go off. Other times I’ll be driving and see something; a building or a person and I’ll get an idea. Other times a book title will come to me and I’ll develop a book around that. I’m never out of inspiration, only the time to write it.
Q8 – S – Do you prefer to write the good guy or the bad guy?
C – Bad. Every day of the week hahahaha!
Q9 – S – As an aspiring author myself, I’m terrible for moving around my workspace, sometimes as much as changing rooms! So it’s super organised chaos, right? How do you like your workspace to be?
C – Pretty much that; Super organised chaos haha! After I’ve finished writing for the day my desk is usually a mess. A mix of bottles of water, empty mugs, dictionaries, thesaurus’s and the notebook for whichever book I’m working on.
Q10 – S – What would you consider a difficult scene to write?
C – Sometimes you have to write those flat sort of scenes that are necessary to the plot for moving things forward, yet nothing massive happens. I mean, we can’t have a murder, a fight or a sex scene on every page can we! Those are hard to write because I’m usually eager to get on to the next scene which I know is exciting.
Q11 – S – I’m pretty sure Nina would be my best friend, seriously… she’s awesome. If you could spend time with one of your characters, who would it be?
C – My characters are all arseholes or psychos! Maybe Mikey because he makes me laugh and you have to love a man who can make you laugh in dire situations. Though Charlie from my biker series – Ride or Die – is an absolute badass woman with a heart of gold so maybe her too.
Q12 – S -I’ve just finished reading your new Thriller, Beautiful Victim – it was amazing! I loved the fact that it wasn’t a straightforward story, with good guys and bad guys. I was wondering, do we have any other thrillers to look forward to? That break the rules for all us law breaking readers?!
C – Oh hell yeah! I have one complete, and three I’m currently working on. All of them are total headfucks that you’re going to love to hate. I never write straightforward stories, so fear not!
Q13 – S – And lastly, tell us a bit about your upcoming work?
C – Well, like I said, I have a lot of upcoming thrillers coming out. I also have the next book in my Ride or Die biker romance series, as well as a spin-off novella coming in May. There’s the sixth book in my zompoc series, plus a stand-alone horror novel. Not to mention a new book in a post-apocalyptic romance series coming too. So yeah…a lot of books are heading your way!
Thanks so much for the interview! This was fun 😊
